Martha Burtis, Keynote Speaker

Martha is the Director of the Digital Knowledge Center at the University of Mary Washington. In this role, she oversees a peer tutoring program that offers mentorship and support to students at the University who are engaged in digital projects and assignments.

In 2013, she was part of the team that developed the first, flagship Domain of One’s Own project at UMW. In her current role, she is able to ensure that students at the University are mentored and supported throughout their work in Domains, complementing the faculty partnerships fostered by her colleagues in the Division of Teaching and Learning Technologies.

Prior to working as the DKC Director, she served as Special Projects Coordinator in DTLT at UMW, helping design and administer various faculty and student development projects. She has also taught in the department of Computer Science and the American Studies program and currently teaches a first-year seminar on digital identity. She has worked in higher education for over 15 years, previously serving as director of DTLT and as director of Web development at the University of Montana.

As an aside (in the spirit of this conference’s theme), when it comes to music she almost always knows the lyrics but never knows the name of the artist.

Participating universities will set up booths, but this is not a poster session; rather it is intended to be a fun, loud, colorful, and interactive morning session not unlike a Record Fair in which students, faculty, and administrators can engage participants in digital demonstrations of projects happening on their respective campuses.
